Obituary of Catherine Roane Cravens

Catherine Roane “Cathie” Cravens

October 20, 1949-May14, 2020

Cathie died in her home in Tucson of complications from COVID-19.

She was born to James H. and Katherine Dominick Cravens in Kansas City, Mo.

She graduated from Southwest HS in 1968, then moved to Tucson where she

received a BA in Political Science and a Master’s in Government at UA.

She was active in Tucson political campaigns and other progressive movements

for women’s rights.

She lived in Fraser, Co., for a few years, where she owned a gift shop and

pursued her passion for skiing. After a tragic fall which fractured vertebrae

in her neck, she could no longer ski. Later, her athletic pursuits were golf,

tennis and softball, at which she excelled. Her other passion was raising

Gordon Setters, which she deeply loved.

Later she served as a Pima Co. Probation Officer, and retired after 19 years.

She was known for her athleticism, love of the outdoors, gourmet cooking,

masterful charcoal grilling and big parties. She had many loves: her friends

and family, playing sports, music and travel.

In her later years, she especially enjoyed attending the Tucson symphony,

and UA women’s basketball and softball games. Cathie will always be

remembered for her big heart, her energy, sense of humor, infectious laughter,

her loyalty, generosity and indomitable spirit.

She is survived by her brother James Cravens and sister Laura Cravens-Wertz,

four nieces, three grand-nieces, and one grand-nephew. We are indebted to her

beloved friend Nancy Tyson, whose steadfast friendship enriched her life

beyond measure.
