Obituary of Hope Reyes Nunez

The family of Hope Reyes Núñez lovingly announces her passing on October 26, 2023, at the age of 90. She died at home surrounded by members of her family. Born on January 13, 1933, Hope attended local schools including Roskruge, Tucson High and four years at the University of Arizona and two years at Thunderbird (formerly known as Arizona Graduate School of International Management & Foreign Trade). Not only was she an honors student but she excelled in women’s sports including softball, tennis and basketball.

Hope married Oscar B. Núñez on Easter Sunday 1955, at Cathedral Church. Their married life took them first to NY City then to Latin America: Mexico City; Caracas, Venezuela; and Bogotá, Colombia. Hope had an interesting career as a secretary working for the Pima County Poverty Program, the American School in Bogotá (CNG) and the US embassy in Colombia with D.E.A. Upon returning to Tucson, Hope was employed with Hughes Aircraft for 15 years until her retirement in 1994.

Hope is preceded in death by her father José Felix Reyes, her mother María Jésus Reyes and her three siblings: Victor Reyes, Graciela Garcia and Aurora Moreno. Hope is survived by her two sisters Guillermina “Minnie” Felix and Jessie Ruiz.

Hope’s self-sacrificing life centered on providing for and raising her children, instilling in them a strong Catholic faith and the value of a good education. She is survived by her six children Roxanne Núñez, Oscar Núñez (Cheney), Thelma Núñez-McNally (John), Gustavo Núñez

(Kimberly), Marcos Núñez (Teresa), Nicholas Núñez (Amy). She will be dearly missed.

Hope was also dearly loved by her grandchildren: Daniel McNally, Christian McNally, Jake Núñez, Cristina Núñez, Corazón Núñez, Cruz Núñez and Jacob Castillo- Núñez.

Hope’s services will include a Rosary and Funeral Mass at Saints Peter & Paul Church (SSPP) on Saturday, November 11, 2023 commencing at 9:00 a.m.

Hope has requested that in lieu of flowers any donations made in her memory be directed to either to the St Vincent de Paul Society or Habitat for Humanity. All donations will be very much appreciated.

Her cremated remains will be put to rest at Holy Hope Mausoleum at a later date (January 2024).
